When I was a child, I remember laying on my back looking up at the clouds to see if I could find something that resembled an animal or face or perhaps even and angel. I’ll bet you did too.
I am still fascinated by clouds especially the big fluffy white ones against the blue sky. I also like to watch the dark clouds building indicating a storm front moving in. They are particularly ominous from the shores of Lake Michigan looking at the
horizon. But some of the most beautiful ones are the wispy pink ones at sunset. So my question is do clouds sometimes have messages in them?
The first mention of cloud in the Bible is in Genesis 9:13-17where the waters receded after
destroying everything on earth except for those safe in the ark.
“I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth. It shall be, when I
bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud; and I will remember My covenant which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. The
rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I will look on it to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth." And God said to Noah, "This is the sign of the covenant which I have established
between Me and all flesh that is on the earth."
Then in Exodus 13:21-22 He led and protected the Israelites in their wanderings.
“And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead
the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so as to go by day and night. He did not take away the pillar of cloud by day or the pillar of fire by night from before the people.”
So we understand from these
passages that God uses the clouds as a sign of His covenant, and in Exodus the cloud was a sign post marking the way the Israelites were to go.
In Daniel 7:13-14 we find a prophetic word about Christ bringing God’s rule to earth.
“I was watching in the night visions, And behold, One like the Son of Man, Coming with the clouds of heaven! He came to the Ancient of Days, And they brought Him near before Him. Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom.
That all people, nations, and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion. Which shall not pass away, And His kingdom the one which shall not be destroyed.”
Three selected passages from the
New Testament again speak of clouds being a part of the coming of the Lord.
Matthew 24:30 “And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the
Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.”
Matthew 26:64“Jesus said to Him, It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right
hand of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
Revelation 1:7 “Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him.
Even so, Amen.”
So I take from what the Bible says that we should keep our eye on the sky and take some time to watch the clouds with an anticipation that one day we will see Him in the clouds.
