Perhaps you are wondering what this flock of birds has to say about unity. In case you don’t know, these birds are known as Skimmers. There are three different species but
only one here in North America and only in the south by the ocean.
These marvelous creatures intrigued me one beautiful day in Florida. They have also been called clown birds due to the bright red part
of their beak. The top part of their beak is shorter than the bottom which allows them to skim across the water and catch fish quite successfully.
But here is what I really noticed about them.
They nest in colonies forming large flocks very different from seagulls that are often seen nearby on the shore. Seagulls are loners and often fight each other for a morsel they may find. In all my days at the ocean I don’t recall ever seeing
a flock of seagulls in a unified flock like the Skimmers.
When not skimming the ocean waters, the flock lands on the shore usually all facing the same direction. I understand there are sometimes a few
rebels doing their own thing. So how can we see a message of unity in the life of Skimmers?
Unity is the state of being united or joined as a whole. The state of being one; oneness, a whole or totality
as combining all its parts into one. Unity is being together or at one with someone or something. It is the opposite of being divided. It is being in harmony or one in Spirit.
4:3 says, “Always keep yourselves united in the Holy Spirit, and bind yourselves together with peace.” NLT
It so saddens Abba’s heart when He sees and hears the discord among those
who claim to be part of His body. The bickering that goes on in congregations grieves the Holy Spirit and the unity is sorely lacking. Perhaps it is time to let go of what we want in our church building and see what He is building in His Church
as a living organism even beyond the four walls of our gathering place.
Verses 4-6 in Ephesians 3 really says it all. “We are all one body, we have the same spirit, and we have
all been called to the same glorious future. There is only one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and there is only one God and Father, who is over us all in us all and living through all.” NLT
more thing about Skimmers. You see in the picture they are all facing one way. When they take off they all do it together and they fly in a large circle of the water and they all come back to shore in oneness and take their place on the shore.
(See picture at the end)
Beloved, let endeavor to live out Ephesians showing the world we are every bit in harmony as a flock of Skimmers. Love one another as He has loved us and by this all men will know
we are His.
