The Tahquamenon River in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
I am sure most believers know John 7:38. In the NIV it reads, “Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said,
rivers of living water will flow from within them.”
I really like what the NLT says, “Anyone who believes in me may come and drink: For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of
living water will flow from his heart.’
There is so much to discover about rivers in The Word. This one in particular
gives us a challenge to understand the full meaning. Every river has what is often called the mouth. It is the place where the river flows into an ocean, a lake, or a bigger river.
river starts where there is a natural source of water. In nature it is often from an underground spring. They also begin in mountains where rain water or snowmelt collects and forms small channels.
I have had the privilege of canoeing on rivers in Northern Michigan. I have also seen rivers in the beauty of creation in America and many others from across the globe in other lands in pictures
All rivers have a point of beginning referred to as headwaters. So now let’s go back to John 7:38 and how does the natural speak into the spiritual application of the Word.
The river that flows out of believers is “living water”. The origin or headwaters of this river flow from us must be the River Of Life that flows from the Throne of God as stated it Revelations 22:1. “Then
the angel showed me a river with the water of life, clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb.” NLT
So beloved, if rivers of living water flow from our heart, it
only comes from the Living Christ within us.
In the natural rivers are often stop or slowed in their flow by dams. Some caused by beavers and others by man harnessing the power of the
river to provide electricity, or often by large trees that fall across it.
But what about the river of living water flowing in us? Are there things that cause a dam
to be built and restrict its flow of life?
Perhaps believing lies that the enemy has sown in our minds can stop the flow. Carrying a deep hurt that we haven't let Abba bring
healing to may cause resistance for living water to flow out of us. Perhaps you are dealing with a personal struggle in relationships that need mending.
In Matthews 12:34 Jesus addresses the
Pharisees in no uncertain terms making it clear that out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.
Just as a natural river has a mouth that flows into a larger body of water, the river
of living water should be flowing from the headwaters of the Throne of God in our heart out through our mouth.
Let us all only have living water flowing by taking care of anything keeping
the flow from being pure words of life to edify ourselves and those who hear. (Matthew 4:29)
