Overcome can be good or not.  First, lets think about the possibilities that one might be overcome with.  Grief, worry, fear, depression, and illness to name a few.  These issues of life not only drain us but also rob us of having the abundant life Jesus came to give each one of us.

How does one overcome when the unexpected circumstances of life happen?

I have discovered that the Word says a lot about being an overcome.  I’m sure many of you already know that.  First, lets look at some scriptures where people like Joseph, the Israelites, Esther, Daniel and Paul were overcome just to name a few.

Genesis 43:30

Joseph hurried out because he was overcome with emotion for his brother, and he was about to weep. He went into an inner room to weep.

Numbers 14:39

When Moses reported these words to all the Israelites, the people were overcome with grief.

Esther 4:4

Esther’s female servants and her eunuchs came and reported the news to her, and the queen was overcome with fear. She sent clothes for Mordecai to wear so he could take off his sackcloth, but he did not accept ⌊them⌋.

Daniel 8:27

I, Daniel, was overcome and lay sick for days. Then I got up and went about the king’s business. I was greatly disturbed (overcome)  by the vision and could not understand it.

2 Corinthians 7:4

I have great confidence in you; I have great pride in you. I am filled with encouragement; I am overcome with joy in all our afflictions.

After reading these, I am sure you noticed which seemed to be on the good side of being overcome.  Joseph and Paul both expressed a sense of elation while the other examples express the circumstances of life that hit us and cause us some inner turmoil.

The key to overcoming the inner turmoil is when we realize we can’t do life alone.  In those times we have a helper to enable us to overcome.

Being an overcomer doesn’t mean the situation goes away and we then have peace.  We can have peace during whatever we face.  We have the assurance of help.

In John 16:33 Jesus assured us of that peace.  These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world."

While we are in this world, we can’t escape the challenges life throws at us, but we can be an overcomer and allow God to take all things and work them together for our good.

Not to over simply it, could overcoming be as simple as turning it over to God?  Could simply taking God at His Word and standing in our position in Christ?

Jesus told us to be of good cheer because He overcame the world and deposited in us the same power to overcome the world. The enemy who continues his attempts to rob, kill, and destroy will continue until we believe God more than him.

His Promise to us is the indwelling Holy Spirit.   The enabling power of His Grace gives us power to be an overcomer.

The word “overcome” is military terminology.  In many passages it speaks of doing battle against the forces of the evil one.   Ephesians 6:10-18 exhorts us to take our stand against the devil and when we do, we overcome him and all the fiery darts of fear, doubt, worry, and whatever he is using to rob, kill, or destroy us.

We all are or can be overcomers and remain faithful.  Revelation 12:11 says “They overcame him (accuser of the brethren) by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony.”

We may lose a few battles in our lifetime, but we will win the war as overcomers if we follow the Lord and His Word to victory.

So beloved ones, whatever your battle maybe today, rise up with the amazing and enabling Grace of God and be an overcomer.
